How it works

Two minutes to set up a job. After that it keeps the count by itself, every morning, for as long as the job runs.

  1. Add the job: address, dates and your contract's weather rule

Rain at or over 0.10 inch, a high under 32°F, wind over 25 mph: whatever your contract says. Paste the weather clause and it proposes the rules for you to confirm.

  2. Every morning it reads the nearest NOAA stations for that site

The nearest airport or first-order station is the record. The nearest co-op or volunteer rain gauge is shown beside it.

  3. An email when a day counts, and a month-end record for the owner

Tap "we lost the day" or "we worked". Three days before a notice window closes, you get a reminder with a drafted notice.

What you get

An independent weather record beside your daily reports, and a count nobody has to keep in their head.

A morning email for every day that counts

The reading, the station, its distance from your site, the count so far against the allowance, and the date notice is due.

Your station's NOAA 10-year table

For a spec that asks for NOAA data from the most recent 10 years: average days a month over each amount of rain and at or under 32°F. Use it as the allowance, or type in your contract's own table.

Notice reminders, with the letter drafted

Three days before the window closes on a day you confirmed, you get the readings and a drafted notice to check and send. It never says a day is owed; it shows the weather met the rule.

Your job's NOAA table

Type a job address, or a pin as latitude, longitude. It finds the nearest NOAA stations and works out the record station's 10-year table from its daily readings, live.

From NOAA daily records through the Regional Climate Centers' ACIS service. Days at or over each amount, averaged over the ten complete years.

Where the numbers come from

Public NOAA records, named on every reading. The reading is from the nearest station, not from your site, and every record shows the station and how far away it is.

  • Daily rain, snow and temperatures: NOAA and National Weather Service stations, through the Regional Climate Centers' ACIS service.
  • Rain during working hours and wind: the station's hourly observations from the National Weather Service API, and NOAA's NCEI daily summaries.
  • Where your job is: the US Census geocoder, or a pin you drop for a site with no street address.
  • raintally.shop is an independent service. It is not run by NOAA, the National Weather Service or any government agency.

Who it's for

Small general and site contractors on jobs with a fixed completion date and liquidated damages.

  • General contractorsDays lost on the critical path, before the owner asks for proof.
  • Site workRain that turns the pad to mud, and the days after it.
  • ConcretePours held for rain or a low under the spec's temperature.
  • RoofingRain and wind that keep crews off the deck.
  • PavingWet base and cold mornings that stop laydown.

Questions

What counts as a weather day?

Whatever your contract says. You enter the rule when you add the job, such as 0.10 inch of rain or more, or a high under 32°F. You can have several rules on one job.

My contract gives me a number of days a month. Can I use that?

Yes. Type your contract's table in, or use the NOAA 10-year table we build for your station if your contract asks for one.

Is the reading from my site?

No. It's from the nearest NOAA and National Weather Service stations, and every record shows the station and how far away it is. Many contracts name NOAA data, but your contract decides what the owner must accept.

Does it know whether we actually lost the day?

No. It tells you the day qualifies on the weather. You tap yes or no, because a day only counts if it stopped work your contract cares about.

Does this replace our daily reports?

No. Keep your daily reports. This gives you the independent weather record beside them and keeps the count.

Is this legal advice?

No. It keeps records and drafts a notice for you to review. What your contract requires, and what to send, is your call and your lawyer's.

What does it cost?

$49 a month for your company, up to 10 active jobs. The first 7 days are free with no card, and you can cancel any time.

Who can sign up?

Businesses only. It's made for contractors, not for homeowners.

Where does the data come from?

Daily readings from NOAA and National Weather Service stations through the Regional Climate Centers' ACIS service, hourly observations from the National Weather Service API, and NOAA NCEI daily summaries. raintally.shop is not run by the government. Stations sometimes correct a reading in the days after; raintally.shop re-reads the last 7 days every day and notes any change with its date.
